Description
Japan became the only industrialized country outside of Western societies in late 19th century. It experienced the ruin by militarism and rapid economic growth in the 20th century. In the early 21st century they had the Fukushima nuclear disaster and also saw a decline in fertility. Japan had a challenge to balance economic growth with individuals’ subjective happiness.
Japanese sociology emerged by importing European and American sociology. Yet it evolved in its own way and has tried to theorize and empirically understand these experiences. Therefore, what it has accumulated will provide lessons to the world.
Contemporary Japanese Sociology aims at showcasing what Japanese sociology has attained and where it goes in the future. The editors of this Major Work have brought together the best and most challenging work in the field for the first time.
The first part deals with empirical works. It focuses on social inequality in the global society. It covers inequalities in education, occupation, income, family formation, and cultural activities in Japan, Asia, and the world. Japanese sociology has accumulated works based on theory-driven, rigorous empirical research.
The second part deals with theoretical developments. It covers mathematical and rational choice sociology since the two research streams have dramatically developed in Japan. The volume covers problems of social dilemmas, social networks, and relative deprivation.
The emphasis is on whether articles are cutting-edge in each field to advance understanding of fundamental social processes. The volumes are supposed to bridge Japanese sociology with sociology in the world, which thereby broadens the sociological horizon.
It will be published as the 30th anniversary commemoration of the Japanese Association for Mathematical Sociology.
